Perak
Perak and Kedah has a unique historical background that was found in the islamic writing from the descendent of Alexander the Great of Macedonia, King Merong Mahawangsa no later than the 2nd Century. It is believed that the son of Merong Mahawangsa founded ‘Gangga Negara Kingdom’ which was believed to cover the area of Beruas, Dinding and Manjung. It was believed that the King had an intention to have a State of its own. So he used an arrow that was made in Silver literally in Malay means ‘Perak’. Anyways, there were also stories saying that due to many silvers and coppers in Perak, that derived the name.
As the second largest states in Peninsular Malaysia with a border with Thailand, it would be quite confusing of where we should start to visit due to the many places to consider when visiting the silver state. Of course with such charming state, you would need to know what would be your interest like.
Our topspot for a weekend beach getaway would probably be Pangkor Island. For those who are into luxury, you might want to consider visiting Pangkor Laut Resort as it is one to the Top Resorts in Asia visited by many celebrities in the past includes Pavarotti, Joan Collins, Michael Schumacher, Eric Cantona and also Michelle Yeoh. A small private island with an infinity pool looking out to the ocean and sea villas where guests stay. The ideal weather for all year round beach holidays would be one of a kind here.
For those who loves challenges we would recommend some cave tour at Gua Tempurung or probably the white water rafting in Gopeng. Should it be raining the night before, the latter could reach up to level III which may require significant maneuvering but not considered dangerous although there might be some rocks, boat drops with medium waves or so. Alternatively, if you would prefer your feet on the ground, try out the certain levels of stretching, climbing, duck walking or even crawling through holes to finally discover the top of the world cavern in the cave tour. We would strongly encourage you to wear long stretcheable pants and probably a pair of gloves for the cave tour though. Both would definitely give you excitement with an interesting journey along the way.
For those who love nature, you could probably consider visiting the Matang Mangrove Forest Reserve or probably Royal Belum Rainforest. Malaysia is truly a treasure for nature-lovers with virgin forests, beautiful floras and faunas, wild animals sight seeings and multitudes of birds. It would be an interesting experience visiting the 40,000-hectare Matang Mangroove as it is recognized as the best managed sustainable mangroove ecosystem in the world. In addition, this forest has been proven to act as a natural barrier against tsunamis. Royal Belum on the other hand, offers a 130 million years old rainforest with stunning views and sorroundings. Experience yourself in the houseboat which includes activities such as easy trekking looking for the Rafflesia flower, nature walks, fishing, waterfall dipping and wildlife spotting.
Before we forget, do visit the town of Ipoh to see the hip and happenings of the old town. With many charismatic old buildings, Ipoh town has been enlightened with many hypsters cafe and scattering of bars with super good food such as the ayam tauge or even creamy beancurd. Tryout the famous white coffee in this town or your tour will be considered incomplete. Your night in Ipoh would be more nicer if you could just stop by Gerbang Malam Ipoh night market selling cheap items. If you feel like eating chinese food, restaurants around here would normally be full by 8pm so be quick.
For families, visit the Laketown Resort with night massages after a tiring daytrip or perhaps just to the Malaysia Animation Park to enjoy the cartoon features. Feel young and vibrant with these activities with the younger kids. You could also stop by at Kellie’s Castle for probably 30 mins to an hour time to see the ruins of the buildings which is believed to be haunted. Is it really haunted? We dont know it either.
Best time to avoid visiting Perak would probably be between March-April and October-December. If you have time constraint and need to travel during these time, carry a light weight raincoat or umbrella just incase.
